Lobster, harness racing, and entertainment headline the 62nd edition of the Summerside Lobster Carnival, July 12 through July 14, on the grounds of Credit Union Place in Summerside.
The Lobster Fishers of PEI are the presenting sponsors of this year’s carnival. Chef Robert Pendergast is returning as the event chef. He will be presenting a number of demonstrations featuring lobster dishes including some unique ones such as lobster cheesecake.
This year’s carnival is offering two lobster suppers on the evenings of July 13 and 14. Acadian entertainers, Louise and Hélène, will perform throughout the suppers and lobster fishers will crack open lobsters and answer questions about the industry.
At the Summerside Raceway will be Harness Racing 101 where people unfamiliar with the long established Island sport can learn how to read a race card, place a bet, and meet the stars of the track, the horses and the drivers. July 14 will feature the 50th running of the prestigious Governor’s Plate.
The entertainment tent features a acts geared towards all ages and interests. The Lobster Carnival segment of the PEI Mutual Youth Talent Competition happens Friday evening, on July 13. The winner of the competition will represent the Lobster Carnival at the PEI Mutual Youth Talent provincial finals.
The East Coast Amusements Midway is offering all the thrills of the rides for the carnival. The Sobeys free Community Barbeque is back for the opening night of the carnival. Sobeys staff will be barbequing hotdogs, fishers will be boiling up lobster for sampling, and Chef Pendergast’s lobster mac and cheese will be given out. The Callbecks Home Hardware Summerside Lobster Carnival Parade is set for twelve noon on July 14.
There is free admission to the carnival, but donations will be gratefully accepted to help with costs. The only ticketed events of the carnival are the midway rides and the lobster suppers. For the full schedule go to www.summersidelobstercarnival.website.
