Curated by Deirdre Kessler

Storm Day

Our wooden house squats
south face to the river.
Pine and spruce
fir and poplar
maple and oak
at our sides and backs.
Somewhere over Labrador
winter gathers ice in
northering teeth
blasts snow past our eaves
takes down the power lines.
Cold creeps in
through walls
ghostlike, penetrates
like neutrinos.
We wrap ourselves in blankets
toss a log into the fire
and hunker close
sneeze and wipe a smoky tear.
When dark comes
we light some lamps
make hot chocolate
on the wood stove
climb into our books.

—Hugh MacDonald, Cold Against the Heart (Black Moss), 2003.

Deirdre Kessler selects a poem a month by an Island poet for The Buzz.
