Conductor Dinuk Wijeratne and violinist Sannu Lawt

March 4
Zion Presbyterian Church

Dinuk WijeratneThe 3rd concert of the PEI Symphony Orchestra’s 50th Anniversary Season will feature guest conductor Dinuk Wijeratne and this year’s Suzanne Brenton Award winner, violinist Sannu Lawt.

A Sri Lankan-born, Canada-based composer-performer, Dinuk Wijeratne has been described by the Toronto Star as “an artist who reflects a positive vision of our cultural future,” and by the New York Times as “exuberantly creative.” Equally at home in collaborations with symphony orchestras, string quartets, tabla players and DJs, Dinuk’s recent highlights include JUNO and ECMA wins for his string quartet pieces Two Pop Songs on Antique Poems, and his appointment as Composer-in-Residence of Symphony Nova Scotia.

In his second guest appearance with the PEI Symphony, Maestro Wijeratne will lead the orchestra through Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 and Canadian composer Violet Archer’s Sinfonietta.

The concert will also feature a performance of Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto by this year’s Suzanne Brenton Award winner, Sannu Lawt. Lawt performs regularly with the PEISO but makes her debut as a soloist through recently winning the award at the Kiwanis Music Festival, which recognizes exceptional talent at the provincial level.

Sannu LawtThe concert takes place at Zion Presbyterian Church at 2:30 pm on March 4. Advance tickets are on sale now at the Confederation Centre’s box office and will also be available at the door before the show. There will also be a free pre-concert talk at 1:30 pm in Zion’s Youth Chapel, where Wijeratne and Lawt will provide their personal insights into the music to be performed.
