Two of Canada’s most popular, gutsy and gripping poets,
Jeanette Lynes
and Douglas Burnet Smith, will read on March 11 at 7:30 pm in the UPEI Faculty Lounge, Main Building, Charlottetown. Both teach literature and creative writing at St. Francis Xavier University.

| The first Play On Words Storytelling Festival is coming to The Guild in Charlottetown March 12 and 13. The festival celebrates stories through spoken word, music, theatre and multi-media presentations in addition to offering two workshops for those wanting to gain skill and confidence in writing and performing. “We have designed the public events into three themes: Fantasy (Friday night); Young Writers (Saturday afternoon) and Island Perspectives (Saturday night),” says Guild executive director, Cate Proctor, “while also including learning opportunities through workshops for either the budding or more established writer/performer.”

PEI’s contribution to CBC Radio’s Canada Reads

CBC Prince Edward Island’s 2010 Battle of the Book Clubs will be held on March 2, at The Guild, 115 Richmond Street in Charlottetown. Start time is set for 7 pm.
“The Battle” has become PEI’s annual contribution to Canada Reads, CBC’s national celebration of Canadian literature. The Canada Reads 2010 book selections are: Good to a Fault by Marina Endicott, Nikolski by Nicolas Dickner, Generation X by Douglas Coupland, The Jade Peony by Wayson Choy, and Fall on Your Knees by Ann-Marie MacDonald. Canada Reads 2010 airs on CBC Radio One March 8–12.

| The 2010 Atlantic Book Awards and Festival will run from April 10 to April 18 with literary events taking place across all four Atlantic Provinces.
The Atlantic Book Awards celebration, a highlight of the week-long festival, will be held on April 14 at 7 pm at the Alderney Landing Theatre in Dartmouth, NS. Co-hosting the awards celebration this year are Newfoundland playwright, comedienne, and author Berni Stapleton and Costas Halavrezos of CBC Radio’s Maritime Noon.

My typical Saturday might include a few errands—groceries, dropping off recyclables, and leaving my dog eared copies of Style at Home at the magazine exchange table just inside the front doors of the Summerside Rotary Public Library. I’ve used the services of the library on and off since I was a kid. But in the last few years I haven’t made it much past the magazines.

Anne Compton
Award-winning poet Anne Compton returns to her native PEI to read from her new book, Asking Questions Indoors and Out, on February 16, at 7:30 pm in the UPEI Faculty Lounge, Main Building. Her reading is part of the Winter’s Tales Author Series sponsored by the UPEI English Department, with funding from the Canada Council for the Arts.
