Talking Bands by Fraser McCallum
Nathan Gill, Mike Carver, Gillian Arsenault, Chris Francis
When The North Lakes went into studio to record their first album, their drummer, Carver, was keen to be given a nickname by sound engineer Charles Austin, who is known to affectionately dole them out. Austin’s response was, “I don’t know if I like you yet” but before long, Carver found himself with a handle to be proud of—”Fat-head.”

The final numbers are in, and it is official, Island Artists Unite for Haiti is the largest independently organized fundraiser of the year. Despite strong winds and snow the Historic Charlottetown Seaport Event Centre was a full house with 1600 people in attendance for nine hours of non-stop entertainment. Many more watched the live stream at www.bellaliant.net, filmed by Universum Media. Due to the generous support of Islanders, over $27,000 of in-kind donations from the corporate community, hundreds of volunteer hours to plan and operate the concert, artists and sponsors ticket sales, merchandise sales, 50/50 and donations, 100% of proceeds are going to the Canadian Red Cross in aid of Haiti relief. All efforts combined raised $47,727.49 for the Canadian Red Cross Relief in Haiti.

Highlights of summer program announced
Isabel Bayrakdarian
The Indian River Festival is looking forward to an exciting and eclectic 15th season of fine music in the acoustic and architectural beauty of its newly acquired home, St. Mary’s Church, Indian River. The individual response to a restoration fundraising campaign has been most positive and although donations continue to come in, the need is still there in order to supply the Festival’s share of a $360,000 restoration project that will begin in the spring. Festival organizers are deeply grateful for the support shown in this project that will ensure the preservation of an important Island heritage building and donations can be made by calling the Festival office or visiting the website.
