Summer Recitals at the Kirk, 2017
Kirk of St. James
The series of chamber music programs formerly known as “Wednesdays at Noon” continues this summer, with some recitals on days other than Wednesday. All seven recitals are at the Kirk of St. James, 35 Fitzroy Street, Charlottetown.
July 21 at 7:30 pm you will hear Alexandra Smith, voice, with Frances McBurnie, piano. Alexandra is also is a percussionist with the UPEI Wind Symphony. She will perform Schumann, Handel, Spanish songs, and an aria from Wuthering Heights.
July 26 at 12:10 pm performers are Isaac Shaw and Lena Westlund, horns. Isaac, former Islander living in Germany, and Lena formerly from Germany, now in living in Norway, return to the Kirk after a performance in last year’s series. Frances McBurnie will join them in the program.
August 2 at 12:10 pm a program of music will be presented by Canadian Women Composers, featuring the talents of Clarissa Tonigussi with Stephanie Cole, piano. In an hour-long recital, vocal repertoire that has been overlooked can be heard, appreciated, and recognized. The composers that have been chosen for the concert are Gena Branscombe, Jean Coulthard, Jean Ethridge, Carol Ann Weaver, Mary Gardiner, Ana Sokolovic, Jana Skarecky, Martha Hill Duncan, and Rebekah Cummings. The works are sung in historical order, beginning with music by Gena Branscombe and ending with a work based on Anne of Green Gables quotes composed in 2017 by Rebekah Cummings. Clarisse Tonigussi is a Toronto based soprano and creator of The CWC Project. Stephanie Cole is a well-known PEI pianist, accompanist and teacher. She is President of the PEI Registered Music Teachers Association.
August 17 at 12:10 pm musicians are Dale Sorensen, trombone, with Frances McBurnie, piano.
