Tragicomedy

A Misfortune

Review by Sean McQuaid

The Charlottetown Festival takes a lot of guff from critics about artistic integrity, cultural nationalism and such whenever they stage yet another recycled American jukebox musical (like the admittedly entertaining confection Million Dollar Quartet); but in the spirit of fair play, we grumpy media types should also take note when the Festival

Profile: Aaron Hastelow

by Jane Ledwell

“Where did the summer go to?” sings the cast of Anne of Green Gables on Confederation Centre mainstage. But Aaron Hastelow, the first Islander to win the role of Gilbert Blythe and performing the role for a second season, there’s no time to be wistful. With his first album released and a once-in-a-lifetime performance as a musical Hamlet, there’s little

A filling Island favourite at The Churchill Arms

#TryThisAndrew
by Andrew Sprague

To say it’s been a corker of a summer would be a massive understatement. From the beginning of July until the middle of August we had rain three times during daylight hours. Twice it came down in sheets for an hour or two, and only once did it rain steadily all day. The rest was beautiful sunshine. On that solitary

You don’t have to be ex-military to enjoy, marvel and reflect as you follow the brick pathway that winds through the Heritage Park at the former CFB Summerside, Slemon Park. Opened in August 25, 2011, the beautiful green space, now dotted with grand gardens, is home to the Commemorative Stone Project. The pathway winds around three former

A gift of Island poetry: Renée Blanchette

Curated by Deirdre Kessler

MY HEART IS A WHEEL

My heart is a wheel,
or a whale fluke, a snail’s antenna,
a bat cave where a squirrel lives

a dewdrop,
a pen and a lighted porch
in the pre-dawn.
Definitely not an empty bucket
or curled leaves on the stair.

Pain is a jungle panther
looking for prey,
leaving a phosphorous trail,
