Les Girls

Review by Lorne Miller

Back at the Confederation Centre in Charlottetown for a second year, Les Girls is once again bringing to the stage their own PEI kitchen party. On Saturday July 14 I had the pleasure of attending their second show of the 2007 season. The group is made up of Louise Arsenault on fiddle and Hélène Bergeron on keyboards and vocals, both members of the well known group Barachois joined by members of the group Clack’Azing comprised of Samantha Gallant on fiddle, Janelle Richard on guitar, Stephanie Collicutt on vocals and bass, Robyn Richard on piano and Paige Gallant on mandolin and fiddle.

Les Girls provides an excellent setting for Louise and Hélène to share their music, humour and Acadian culture as well as a chance to showcase and perform with the next generation of Acadian musicians. Any one of these talented musicians and performers would be enough to provide a great evening of musical entertainment individually but to have the rare treat of having all seven on stage at once is something not to be missed.

The sellout audience was a mix of all ages that were unanimous in their enjoyment of the music, stepdancing and Acadian humour, including references to The British Invasion which was taking place on the main stage. This Acadian kitchen party complete with story telling, reminiscing of musical family and friends, stepdancing, laughter, guitar playing and fiddling, saw young and old join together to celebrate true Acadian music, in both English and French. And no kitchen party is complete without the required “kitchen” instruments of forks, knives and corn jar shaker.
