Shorelines and Waterways
Maurice Bernard prepares for solo show at Eptek Centre

Summerside Scene
by Peggy Miles

Maurice Bernard Maurice Bernard Maurice Bernard is a familiar face in Summerside. You might find him sketching at a community hotspot or with a group of art students along the boardwalk making elaborate sandcastles. But most likely you’ll find him at the studio located at the top of the stairs in the historic Lefurgey Cultural Centre. If you’ve driven by in the evening recently you may have noticed a light illuminating the second floor window. Bernard has been clocking long days in anticipation of his upcoming exhibit to be hosted at the Eptek Centre. Entitled Shorelines and Waterways, the installation will remain all summer and is the first art show initiated by the well known artist in 17 years. Known for his ability to effectively capture the beauty of the Island landscape, this exhibit promises to be a reflection of these talents.

The show will introduce twenty-six original paintings including two large anchor pieces, Capital View and Summer Day at Basin Head. Capital View features a panorama of the Charlottetown Harbour as viewed from Rocky Point. Studying the painting, observers will locate a visiting cruise ship in port, the vibrant streetscapes of Charlottetown, and the punctuation of foliage. From this vantage point Bernard says the painting portrays the sense of a quiet City.

The second anchor, Summer Day at Basin Head, depicts an abundance of fun-seekers splashing around the waterfront of this Eastern PEI community. Clad in bathing suits, young water enthusiasts jump off the pier or take a giant leap from the locally renowned bridge.

Bernard sometimes includes specific people or objects into his paintings. While onsite sketching at Basin Head, a young man asked if he could be incorporated into the work of art. The youth can be found as one of the wharf jumpers in the piece. And in a painting featuring the waterfront of Tyne Valley, a vintage car is seen driving along the roadway. It represents the artist’s family vehicle and reflects a memory of the day that seven year old Bernard accompanied his father to the community to purchase the car.

Back at the studio, the paintings that will appear in the upcoming show are lining one long wall. Currently in various stages of development, Bernard is committed to having each work ready for the show’s opening on June 17. He uses a layering process working first from the background (trees, bodies of water) and then to the finer forefront details. A well developed concept is established at the commencement of each piece which helps to guide the process. “I love creating elaborate compositions,” Bernard expresses.

What’s next? The artist has plans to host another show in 4 years called At Work and At Play. The series will feature scenes of work, worship and recreation.
